When you mention Taiwan,
many people’s first thoughts are “Made in Taiwan” or possibly an uneasy
relationship with its big brotherly neighbour, China, but this tiny jewel in
the Pacific has a lot, lot more to offer and whilst most of its population live
on the bustling West Coast, the Pacific East Coast is a rugged land of lush
jungly mountains running down to sweeping palm-fringed beaches, inhabited by
some of the friendliest and most helpful people on the planet. Remote areas of
incredible natural beauty are connected by good quality, little used roads,
seemingly built exclusively for the use of two- wheeled adventurers seeking the
wilder side of Ilha Formosa (“Beautiful Island”).

Our route takes us
from the world’s deepest marble gorge (a natural startpoint after finishing in
the world’s deepest gorge in China in 2016!) through the vast East Rift Valley,
an enchanted wonderland of rice paddies, tropical fruit orchards, small
indigenous villages, and soothing hot springs, to emerge on the dramatic East
Coast. We move south down the coast, mountains to the right, Pacific to the
left, until the last day when we make our way across the Southern Central
Mountains and then down to Kenting, Taiwan’s tropical playground, and now
famous as the shooting location for the final beach scenes in the Life of Pi
